چکیده

Results are reported from an experiment on RF pulsed heating of copper at SLAC. Damage in the form of cracks may be induced on the surface after the application of many pulses of RF. The experiment consists of two circularly cylindrical cavities operated in the TE011 mode at a resonant frequency of 11.424 GHz. Each cavity received 8.5 MW, 1.2 μs pulses at 60 Hz corresponding to a calculated temperature rise of 120 K on the copper surface. After 5.5×10 pulses, the experiment was stopped and the copper surfaces were examined. Damage is present on the area of the surface where the maxiumum heating occurred.

The Slac Pulsed X-ray Facility*

The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) operates a high energy (up to 33 GeV) linear accelerator delivering pulses up to a few microseconds wide. The pulsed nature of the electron beam creates problems in the detection and measurement of radiation both from the accelerator beam and the klystrons that provide the RF power for the accelerator. Hence, a pulsed x-ray facility has been built a...

Laser Pulse Heating

Recently, interest has developed in pulsed heating effects on a copper surface[1]. Pulsed heating is one of the limits on the gradient of a structure based linac. The heat generated by an intense RF pulse on the metal surface can result in hundreds of degrees of temperature rise at 1 GeV/m. After a certain number of cycles, the metal may crack due to thermal fatigue and the surface properties m...

The Viability of Oil Extraction from Trinidad Tar Sands by Radio Frequency Heating: A Simulation Approach

Trinidad has tar sand resources of about 2 billion barrels of oil on land in the Parrylands/Guapo and Brighton areas. With an oil price of over USD 25 per barrel, the commercial extraction of oil from Trinidad tar sands is viable, but it requires a careful study. The relatively small extent of this tar sand (about 10,000 acres and with depths varying from surface to less than 500 feet) and with...

Experimental High-gradient Testing of an Elliptical-rod Photonic Band-gap (pbg) Structure at X-band

An 11.4 GHz photonic band-gap (PBG) structure where the rods in the inner row have an elliptical cross-section has been designed at MIT and manufactured and tested at high power and high repetition rate at SLAC. This structure exhibits lower surface magnetic fields on the rods relative to previous PBG structures tested at SLAC, which reduces the ohmic heating of the rod surface in an effort to ...

Large Signal Bias Dependent Modeling of Avalanche Photodiode Based on Pulsed RF Measurement

This work presents a method for large signal characterization of avalanche photodiode (APD) where measurements were carried out using pulsed RF signal at different DC bias points to extract dispersive parameters of the avalanche photodiode. Pulsed optical excitation on the photodiode were synchronized with the pulsed RF signal using a synchronization circuit and in this way characterization of ...
